Your Sunday Best – The Church Tuxedo

Every day of the week, you ear your business clothes. It could be overalls, oilskins, a suit or a uniform. But one day of the week, many men by tradition, get dressed up in their very best tuxedo in order to go to Church on Sunday. It has always been a traditionally accepted custom, that you dress up in your best clothes for Church

If you are going to wear a tuxedo to church and you have a number of them, you should choose your best one along with the coordinated accessories that go along with it. These would be your shoes, cufflinks and either bow tie or other neck wear. These are formal clothes because although Sunday Church is a time for family and friends, there is the undertone of formality with it including the conclusion when you shake the priest’s hands.

If you wish, you could wear a hat. However, it’s again important that it’s reasonably formal in appearance. Anything with a wide brim will only serve to annoy those sitting behind you.

You should never wear a “loud” shirt. Something plain and discreet will suffice. Even youngsters should wear smart shirts, although in many churches it is now quite acceptable to wear the collar open as they have become more relaxed about such things.

With regard to the tie, it depends whether your’s is one of the more lenient churches where it would be seemingly appropriate. It’s easy to still look smart in your tuxedo with no tie.

Shoes, however, are very important. While it may not be required by your church, your best tuxedo demands appropriate footwear. A black tuxedo with black shoes is always a safe bet. And make sure they are polished and presentable.

Even though going to church is not attending your job, obviously it remains one of those venues at which you want to look your best. If you choose to wear a light colored tuxedo instead of a black or darker color, then you should pair it with light colored shoes to complete the appropriate look.

Finally, although you may own lots of nice large gold, silver or other pieces of jewelry, forgo large rings, necklaces and bracelets at church. It is not the place for such showy items. Tuck any necklaces inside the color of your shirt and keep the other big items at home until church is concluded for the day. Otherwise, these pieces can be not only visually distracting but also loud if they bang and clang together throughout the service.
