An undertaker must be active and be ready to work beyond normal schedule, as he has to be available 24 hours a day. This is primarily an outdoors job, which will require him to be away from office for long hours.

An undertaker must be an excellent communicator and a patient listener. With customers hailing from so many religions, cultures and communities he should be able to interact with and handle each one of them efficiently. A sensitive and caring attitude will be a great help in this job. As an undertaker, he is also expected to comfort the family in time of grief, and he should not allow pain or grief to cloud his mental faculties.

Undertakers must be serious and dignified by nature, but must not look gloomy or morose, as this may heighten the grief of the family and friends of the deceased person.

By nature, undertakers must not be narrow minded. They should be ready to honour the faith and beliefs of all communities and must be knowledgeable in this field. They must also be familiar with the funeral rituals and customs of burial of different sects.

A good undertaker will naturally possess good management abilities and organisation skills. Many services will need to be organized by the undertaker and this will need good communication and management ability from the undertaker.

An undertaker must be smart in legal matters and must know the official procedures to be followed, or the formal approvals needed from the government authorities before organizing funeral services. He will need to be fully conscious of procedures to be followed for the purpose of collecting death certificates or claims for insurance.

Finally, he should essentially be able to and be eligible to drive vehicles such as hearses and limousines during the funeral ceremony.
