The Significance Of Rituals In A Buddhists Funeral

Buddhism is one of the most widespread religions practised across the globe. The basic tenets of the religion have been derived from the teachings of Buddha. People who practise Buddhism are expected to display unconditional love for all and try to attain the Ultimate Truth.

Buddhist funeral rituals are also based upon these fundamental tenets of the religion. After a person dies in a Buddhist family, some rituals have to be practised in order to make sure that the departed soul rises to a higher stage in afterlife. Prayers are made calling upon the good energies of the dead person for his or her deliverance from this cycle of life.

A traditional ablution of the deceased marks the start of the Buddhist funeral rituals. The second stage involves presence of monks, who read out religious scriptures and thereby aid the soul in finding eternity. The teachings of Lord Buddha, which speak of the value of goodness and compassion in life, are read aloud. In the meantime, the body is made ready for the last journey. The relatives normally place some coins in the casket of the deceased. This is for enabling the deceased to pay and go across the River of Three Hells.

Then the friends and family pay their last respects to the deceased as the casket is put at the altar. The relatives and friends give condolences to the dead person’s family, while the visitors pray for his soul. The ceremony is accompanied with chanting of relevant sutras by the monks. After the chanting is over, people attending the ceremony bow at the altar. After the proceedings, the family members of the departed distribute gifts to the visitors for sharing their grief.

Once these rituals are over, the family can decide to bury or cremate the body according to their family beliefs. The different ceremonies are a means of bringing peace and acceptance to the family members of the departed as they know their prayers are aimed at elevating the status of the departed in his after life.
