Latinstar9: Santeria May Be The Religion You Have Needed
Santeria may be the answer you have been looking for if you do not quite feel that your current religion is fulfilling your spiritual needs. Religion is a very personal choice and where some simply follow the religion that was passed down from their parents, others feel that they need something entirely different to fulfill their spiritual needs.
Santeria was founded in 1515 and this centuries old religion has its roots in the countries of Cuba and exotic Brazil. It is the melding of two faiths, namely the Roman Catholic worship of their Saints and the traditional Yoruba religion of the West African community that originated in south-western Nigeria.
An Orisha is an aspect of the God force personified as a deity. The evolution of Yoruba into Santeria all began when the Yoruban people were enslaved and taken to work as slaves in the Caribbean islands. Originally Yorubans practiced La Regla Lucumi, but after their arrival they were forcibly baptised into the Roman Catholic faith.
There they were unwillingly baptised in the name of the Roman Catholic faith. They were, however, faithful to their original religious beliefs despite the fact that they were forbidden to practice La Regla Lucumi any longer.
Being a resourceful and intelligent group of individuals they found ways to associate the Catholic saints with each of the Orisha to correspond with their spiritual practices. There are nine different Orisha, namely Eleggua, Olorum, Obatala, Yemaya, Oya, Babalu Aye, Ochosi, Oggun and Chango.
So Santeria came into being and it is a deeply spiritual religion with a complex structure. Religion is, as mentioned before, a deeply personal choice and if you feel that this might be the correct path you must feel it is so in your heart. Read up about it and ask other Santerians about it before making the final decision to walk your path.
