Customs And Traditions Common To Funerals

Many traditions and rituals characterize funeral ceremonies from around the globe. During funerals, family and friends of the departed pray for his or her soul and resign themselves to their loss and sorrow.

Church rules are followed in Christian funerals rites. But because there are over 200 different Christian communities, funeral rituals could differ, depending on the particular affiliation of the family.

An important ritual of a Christian funeral, known as wake, is the very first custom that is carried out before the real funeral and involves watching over the deceased and recital of prayers for the eternal peace of his soul.

In present days, funeral rites event is the moment when relatives and acquaintances can pay their last respects to the deceased person. The body is preserved and placed either at the residence or in a Chapel with only a particular number of visiting hours. In the past, the stage following the wake used to be that of absolution, where a cross was placed on the deceased’s body and offertory, which carried the gifts offered by visitors, and the person was absolved of the sins of this birth.

Next step is the actual funeral rites itself in which the dead person is put into a hearse and brought to the Church, where the priests and others recite prayers and hymns from the Holy Bible. Then, the clergy calls upon a friend or family member to give a eulogy or tribute to the departed’s life. In some cases funeral rituals include the tolling of bells to mark the end of the service. Following the funeral proceedings, the casket is taken to the burial site where a burial service is held before the act of burial.

Lastly, the funeral’s completion is marked by a lunch organized for the family members and those present at the funeral rites. The main aim of this custom is to share the grief of the family and help them deal and come to terms with the loss.

Give your deceased loved ones the funerals they deserve with peaceful funeral services.
