Take Time to Review and Count Your Blessings
Remember when you were young and the school teacher said “We will be having a test in a few days?” That meant that it was time to start reviewing the things that you had learned in class. Hopefully, you had been studying all along.
When you heard these words you knew you needed to kick your studies into high gear. Although you had been studying all along, it was now time to really do a thorough review to make sure you understand everything, since you didn’t know exactly what would be covered on the exam.
You know the Bible is full of reviews, and sometimes I think God wants us to just stop and review. If we look back in the Old Testament, we find in Exodus 15 that Moses did a great job of reviewing. Just after God had brought Israel safely through the Red Sea and had destroyed their enemies behind them.
Exodus 15:1 says that Moses and the people of Israel sang to the Lord. The entire song that they sang out to God was a review of the many things that God had done to protect Israel. He saved them from their enemies, showed mercy upon them, He led them safely through the wilderness, and generally just looked out for them and took care of them.
Moses was not the only one who did a lot of reviewing. In the book of Psalms there are many passages that just retrace Israel’s history and thank God for His blessings. I think particularly of Psalm 18, where David wrote, “I will love You, O Lord, my strength.” He goes on to talk about why he loves God: God is his strength, his rock, his fortress, his deliverer.
While the Old Testament has some excellent examples of reviews, this also continues into the New Testament where we can find even more. In Hebrews we can read a review about the many great things that God had done. The review also talks about great leaders from the Old Testament and how they had tremendous faith in what they could not see.
Taking time to review is a good thing, whether it is for a test in school or a review of what God has done in your own life. Never forget all that God has done. As you review, make an effort to count your blessings, you may be surprised at just how blessed you are.
