5 Tips for Maximizing Your Time with a Christian Counselor
Many Americans that are dealing with struggles and challenges in their lives will choose to see a Christian counselor in hopes of helping the recovery process. Counselors help clients by looking at situations from a different perspective than the client can and by providing sound advice on how to handle the situation. Christian counselors differ from secular counselors because their guidance is based on Scripture and its teachings.
If you are currently seeing a Christian counselor or considering doing so in the future, here are some things that you can do to get the most out of the experience.
1. Go Consistently
One of the most important things you can do is to be consistent with your appointments. Most counselors will want to see you on some sort of regular schedule, such as once per week or once per month. In order to get the most out or your appointments an the time that you are spending with the counselor, be consistent and stick to the schedule. There are many distractions and interferences that can cause a few appointments to be missed, but be staying consistent you will give yourself the best chance to overcome the issues that you are facing, and to do so in as short a span of time as possible.
2. Pray
Christian counselors typically emphasize the importance of prayer with their clients. Whether you are in session with the counselor or on your own facing a difficult situation, make prayer a part of your life and ask for God’s help in properly dealing with the issues that you are facing.
3. Be Open and Willing to Change
Many of us go to counseling with the attitude that other people are the cause of all of our pain and they are the ones that need to change. Regardless of who is at fault, we can always improve our situation be being willing to change ourselves if needed. Focusing inwards on ourselves rather than outwards on other people will lead to a more healthy attitude about the situations, and we will actually be able to make some progress.
4. Really Listen to the Counselor
Most counselors make an effort to let the client do most of the talking during the session. Their focus is on listening to you and understanding your situation. In order to get the most out of your time with the counselor, make it a priority to really listen to what the counselor is telling you and the advice that they give.
5. Concentrate on Changing the Things that are Within Your Control
Many of the issues that will cause you trouble will involve all kinds of factors that are outside of your control. Getting hung up on these details and increasingly angry will not help the situation if you are not able to have an impact. Rather, focus on those things that you can control, such as your own attitude and actions, and you’ll find the results to be much more significant.
