4 Tips for Finding the Right Christian Counselor

For those who are struggling with a particular issue and looking for some help from a Christian counselor, finding the right one in the local area can be difficult. Most people do not know anything about the counselors in their area, or where to turn when they are looking for one.

Since most of us don’t know of someone offhand that can provide Christian counseling services, it can be incredibly helpful just to know where to start your search. Finding a counselor doesn’t have to be difficult if you follow the steps discussed in this article.

In this article we’ll look at a few methods for finding a counselor and how you should start your search.

1. Ask Your Pastor for a Referral

For those who attend church, the pastor can be a great resource. Many pastors offer counseling services to people of the congregation who may be in need. However, most pastors will not have the experience to deal with all situations. In these cases, the pastor may do what they are capable of, and refer other people to counselors in the area.

Your pastor may or may not be able to help you himself. If he is not able to help, chances are that he will have a local counselor in mind that would be a good fit for your situation. This is one of the best ways to find a counselor that you can trust and feel comfortable with.

By starting you search with your pastor you will be able to find out if your church has any resources that can be of help to you, and if not, you should at least be able to be pointed in the right direction.

2. Ask God for His Assistance with Finding a Counselor

If you are seeking for a counselor to help you with a specific situation, take time each day to pray and ask for God’s assistance in your search. Ask Him to put the right person into your life that will be able to give you the guidance and help that you are seeking.

3. Ask Your Friends and Family if They Know a Good Counselor

You may not even be aware that some of your friends or family have seen counselors, but many people have. If you feel comfortable approaching your friends and family for advice about finding a counselor, you may be able to get a good referral from someone you trust.

4. Use the Internet

If you’re unable to find the right counselor through these other methods, fortunately the internet makes it possible to search on your own. You can go to Google and do a search for counselors in your area, or you could visit a resource like the directory from the American Association of Christian Counselors will allow you to search based on your local area.
