Atheism is a disbelief in the existence of God or the belief that there is no God. Atheists actively reject the existence of God. However, this traditional definition does not capture the kind of atheism of many atheists, who simply hold an indifference to the issue of God’s existence.

Some atheists go beyond a claiming the absence of belief in gods: they actively claim that a particular god, or all gods, do not exist. The lack of belief in God(s) is often referred to as the “weak atheist” claim. And the claim that god or gods do not exist is known as “strong atheism.”

There is a further distinction between the strong and weak atheist positions. “Weak atheism” is skepticism in the existence of God. “Strong atheism” is a consciously held belief that God does not exist at all. Not all atheists are “strong atheists.” There is a qualitative difference in the “strong” and “weak” claims.
