It is one of the best gifts my mother has ever given me. She spent the winter piecing it together and now I hold in my hands a bound and translated copy of the letters her own mother wrote to her from a Salzburg refugee settlement in the late 1940′s. From Hungarian to English, these letters unfold the tale of a family coping in a postwar world and they were sent on their way across the Atlantic sealed with love and hope for an eldest daughter’s success. Woven in among the family news were requests for my mother to send back goods that were otherwise impossible to obtain in the difficult living conditions amid Europe’s rubble.

Many of the requests were ones I would have typically expected, given the history of the times: antibiotics, shoes, sugar and so on. But there was a dry good mentioned that caught me off guard. It was a petition for some elastic to sew into the younger children’s underwear which was wearing out. Certainly this was a mundane essential I would never have thought of.

How many pairs of my own children’s outgrown underwear have I jettisoned that were still bright white with plenty of stretch left in them? I have always done so with a measure of guilt but underwear just isn’t the kind of clothing the local thrift shop will redistribute. This makes the picture in my mind all the more poignant: My grandmother eagerly awaiting a package that would allow her to start sewing and take care of her little ones’ hidden needs.

Most of us think nothing of walking into a discount department store and chucking a package containing several pairs of simple undergarments into our baskets. The price is about as unexciting as the product itself, posing no hardship at the cash register. But now I am thinking that my definition of hardship is a very limited one and that there are many depths to this term that coexist in our own American communities.

I put some cursory research into the subject and have discovered that donations of new underwear and both baby diapers and adult diapers, are welcomed by shelters and charities. It seems I am not the only one who applies the “out of sight, out of mind” phenomenon to this clothing donation category. Charitable organizations always have a need for a supply of these items.

With that potent image of my grandmother’s particular request in mind, I think it would only be appropriate for me to organize a Diaper Dump or Drawer Drop. Privately, it would be in honor of that lifeline between she and her daughter. Publicly, it would raise awareness about an overlooked need in our own community, benefitting both givers and receivers.

Cotton underwear and disposable baby diaper contributions may initially appear to be the main focus of such an event but there are some other important elements to consider. The expense of both disposable baby diapers and adult diapers do not come under the umbrellas of the WIC , Medicare or food stamps programs. This often leaves an already strapped family in a deeper lurch over some basic necessities that cannot be ignored. Adult diapers and adult incontinence products may seem like an unusual component of a charity drive, but it is important to realize that adult diapers are a financial burden for many seniors living on the edge and family caregivers who already have a full plate of financial obligations.

Organizing this type of a donation event can be a lot of work but there is also a lot of community fun and spirit to be experienced. Once there is an established partnership with a charity that will be taking delivery of the results, publicizing the event is the next most important step. Posters and literature announcing the upcoming drive should be up at churches, clinics, schools and storefronts. These places all make excellent collection sites as well. A local radio station should be able to make free announcements as part of their public service and maybe even volunteer a personality to broadcast from the main collection site. Festivity offerings like a small petting zoo or rides in a firetruck can all add up to a big turnout.

If one wanted to kick things up a notch or two, in the words of a popular chef, a cocktail occasion celebrating the cause could be a ticketed event. Admission would also require the drop of donated undies or adult diapers at the door for a fun “Drop Your Drawers” evening. An evening like this has the promise of popular appeal and could easily become an annual event.

My mother, at eighteen and working overtime emptying bedpans in a psychiatric hospital to pay back her boat fare, dutifully and with love tucked rolls of elasticized waistband material in among the medicine, shoes and winter coats that she regularly shipped to Europe. That was a different time with different needs. But undergarments are in many cases, an unseen and urgent need today on our own home front and it is a fact that we can easily do something about.

Let’s explore the truth about the Holy Spirit and spiritual guidance. Is the Holy Spirit somebody we can individually have a relationship with or do we just blindly believe what we are told about it. If it is that easy to just believe without experiencing how do we plug into the counseling and guidance that is supposed to be available to us directly from the Holy Spirit? These are just questions but important questions that remain unanswered for many professed believers.

It is doubtful anyone alive in the earth can fully define the Holy Spirit in terms that we can all understand. That is due to the fact that each of our experiences gets filtered and interpreted through our ego mind. What we need is for people who believe they are already receiving guidance from the Holy Spirit to gather and exchange what each other experiences. Maybe then we will reach a fuller understanding as a group. Although people have different names when referring to their spiritual guidance they all agree that the guidance of the Holy Spirit comes from within.

Some people share the belief of the Holy Spirit being our higher self while others think of the Holy Spirit as their guardian angel. ‘Our higher self’ is the belief of who we are in our most evolved state at a time that transcends time and space. Perhaps the Holy Spirit and guardian angels exist as separate entities. Another group believes that the Holy Spirit is our Creator God who exists everywhere.

What does the Holy Spirit do to guide us?

What is the reason for us needing a Holy Spirit to guide us?

How do we connect with spirit?

How long before the Holy Spirit guides us to everlasting peace?

Because God is everywhere and God is also Spirit we receive guidance from within as well as from outside of ourselves. Often times we may not hear what we already know internally so when we hear it coming from outside of our self its like 2 or more minds coming together and agreeing. The Holy Spirit relates to us individually as well as collectively. Its up to us to be open to the gift of guidance that we have all been given.

It is about a half inch thick sheaf of bound pages and quite possibly, one of the best gifts my mother could ever give me. Translated from Hungarian to English, it is a collection of her own mother’s letters written to her and mailed from a refugee settlement in Salzburg in the late 1940′s. They are stories of family life under difficult circumstances, infused with hope and longing for an eldest daughter who had found a new life across the Atlantic. And intertwined with love and familial accounts, there were continual requests for basic goods that were unattainable in the ruins of Europe.

Antibiotics, sugar and shoes were among the expected enumerations of these letters’ requests. But one particular petition stood out for me, an item so commonplace in my life that I have never before given it a second thought. Her mother desperately needed elastic waistband material because the little children’s underwear was falling apart and she hoped to mend the articles.

Simple undergarments are readily available at places like Walmart in packs of five or six, at a price that does not seem like much of a hardship. But then that is not keeping in mind the various levels of hardship that can exist in our American communities. Our society has its barriers and veneers that keep a lot of people’s struggles below the average citizen’s radar. Underwear may not be as uncommon a concern as first thought.

With very little research, one quickly discovers that there is always plenty of shelf space available at a variety of charities and shelters for donations of new underwear, disposable baby diapers and adult diapers. It also stands to reason that because these are “out of sight” necessities, they do not attract the average donor’s attention.

With that image of my grandmother in mind, it seems appropriate for me to organize a Drawer Drop or Diaper Drive. It would be a marker for me to privately honor that essential link between my mother and grandmother. Of course, the event would also serve the primary purposes of providing for a need and raising the community’s awareness about donating forgotten necessities.

How does one go about organizing such an event? After contacting and entering a partnership with a local charity, publicizing the event is crucial. Churches, fire departments, clinics, schools and storefronts make excellent locations for both advance advertizing and the collection of the goods on the day of. Getting a local radio station to announce the event as part of its public service messages is very helpful; maybe even get the station to be on location for part of the drop and its festivities. Some successful drives I have read about offered a gamut of activities ranging from face painting to handing out chocolate popsicles dubbed as “Poopsicles”. I am not sure I would advise heading in that direction but there is plenty of room for imagination.

If one is in the mindset of a more quiet and distinguished affair, a wine and cheese evening could be a ticketed event that also required a pack of undies or adult diapers donated at the door before admission. Posters or invitations announcing a “Drop Your Drawers” evening would be sure to cause a fun stir that could generate a productive outcome.

The picture in my mind of my maternal grandmother patiently waiting for the arrival of some elastic so she could take care of her little ones’ hidden needs is something I cannot shake. My own kids have outgrown plenty of pairs of bright white underwear that still had a lot of life left in them but underwear is not a used clothing category that Goodwill handles. With momentary guilt, I have had to discard these pieces.

Cotton underwear is easily found in packages of multiples at most department stores and is sold at prices that do not seem like much of a hardship. But that is shallow thinking on my part; I am not taking into account what levels of hardship may possibly exist in my own town. There are many hidden struggles that lie beneath the veneer of my community or simply do not attract my radar because of my limited social scope. Undergarments may be more of an unsung concern that I originally thought.

After a little research, I have discovered that shelters, charities and relief organizations deeply appreciate donations of new underwear, baby diapers and adult incontinence products like adult diapers and pull-ups. It turns out that “out of sight, out of mind” applies to this particular area of clothing contributions. There is always an outstanding request for a supply of these items in unopened, new packaging at charitable organizations.

The rules of organizing a Diaper Drive or Drawer Drop are open to possibility and imagination. After entering a partnership with a charity for the event, it is important to focus on publicity. Churches, fire departments, schools, clinics are all among the myriad places to approach about placing posters and possibly being drop off locations. A local radio station can announce the drive in its public service messages, maybe even send a local radio personality down to broadcast from your central collection location. Outdoor activities can feature as much entertainment volunteerism as you can muster, from balloon animal making to a chili cook-off.

My mother, at eighteen years old and steadily paying back her trans Atlantic fare, would get off from a shift of emptying bedpans at a psychiatric hospital and pack a parcel of medicine, clothes and treats to ship back to Europe. Dutifully and lovingly tucked in among the hard earned goods, was a generous roll of elastic waistband material. It is a different time now but some unseen needs have not changed. We can certainly do something about that on our own home front.

For it is Gods plan !

There once was a young couple who lived in a beautiful town. They had the best of everything. Their love was strong and real. When their first child was born she was the most beautiful child they had ever seen. The couple believed their life to be perfect.

One day when their Daughter was about seven years old the Couple was in a car crash.Checking his wife right away the husband was relived to see she was ok. They both had received only a few scratches. They turned to check on their young daughter and as soon as they saw her both of them burst into tears. The wife started screaming NO GOD ! PLEASE GOD NO ! Their pain was felt by anyone and everyone who happened to be around them that day. The Beautiful young child had passed on and left this world .

During the funeral the deceased child’s mother kept asking why ? Why my child? oh dear Lord why? People paying there respects to this wonderful couples most beautiful child tried to console her. They told her things like “It is the Lords will” and “She is in Heaven now” These things did not help the child’s Mother and she cursed God Saying to the People “There is no God” for if there was such a God how could he allow something so terrible to happen? Surely he would have saved my child and she would still be here with us!!

Years passed by as they always do and the pain this Couple felt started to ease. They had more children over the years, all very beautiful None quite as beautiful as their first one.Their life went back to being as close to perfect as can be.But Every time the women heard something bad had happened in the world it reinforced her belief that there was no God and no Heaven up above,For surely no God would allow such terrible things to happen in this world !!!

One day as the Woman was walking to the store she heard these screams “NO LORD PLEASE LORD NO” The tone of the screams took her back to the death of her child and she ran toward the sound of them. She saw the woman who was screaming and behind her she could see a building on fire, My Child is in there Screamed the woman! Pointing to the building engulfed in flames. Knowing the pain this woman would go threw and not wishing it on anyone she raced into the building. Flames shot at her and she could feel them burning her but the pain was some where else and did not hurt her .As the flames got larger and the heat got much hotter the woman thought this is what hell must be like! Then she thought but there is no hell for if there is No God and No Heaven then there can’t be a Hell can there? These thoughts passed threw the woman’s mind as she felt herself begin to grow tired.

As She felt herself about to pass out the Women saw a child in the distance and with new found strength she started walking towards the child. As she got closer she could see it was the most beautiful young girl she had ever seen . When she reached the child the child spoke hello mother it is I your Daughter the one killed in that car accident those many years ago.

No the Woman said you are gone your Dead. Dead yes I may be Mother but gone no I have never left you .I have always been in your heart and you in mine. But I am with the Father now in the most Wonderful Kingdom imaginable. With who? asked the Woman , The Father God answered the child the one you denounced upon my death. No said the woman there can’t be a GOD or a heaven For surely no God would allow the Terrible things to Happen that happen upon this earth. Terrible things are done by terrible people answered the child and they will answer for their sins in the afterlife have no fear of that my Mother, The Lord will see that justice is done.

But what of you asked the Mother you where not taken from me by a terrible person it was an accident why did the Lord take you from me. The Child smiled at her Mother and spoke Mother what you see as the most terrible thing ever is not. For I am in the Kingdom of the Lord and there is no greater reward then that ! My life on Earth was short Mother, I agree with you on that but Mother let me let you in on a little secret “All life on Earth is short” It is just a blink of the eye to the Father. Miss me Mother for I know you always will, But have faith in the Father for if you believe in him and follow his words you will be with me again one day and then you will feel no pain or sorrow ever again. The Mother reached down picked up her child closing her eyes and hugging the child to her bosom, She heard a voice that was not her Daughters say “I will always Love you my Child”

The woman opened her eyes and she saw lights and heard sirens and the voices of many people. Not sure what was going on she looked down at her child only to see that she was not holding her child but a small young boy. The Woman who she had seen screaming was grabbing for this child saying Thank you oh thank you Lord for sending this Woman to rescue my Child ,In my heart Lord I always knew you would save him, for surely you would never allow something so terrible to happen !!!!
In these troubling economic times, I have been extremely fortunate to have been making more money than I have ever made in my life. Some could say that I am lucky and that might be true, but I suspect it has more to do with the way I live my life.

I live what I call a life of Effortless Fulfillment which means that I do what I want to do when I want to do it. I allow my heart to be my guide to do the things I do and I dont worry about things. I live by faith and courage and have enough Self-Love that I trust myself above all else. For as long as I have been traveling this path, skeptics have been telling me I live in a dream land and my philosophy is unrealistic in the “real” world. I wonder how these same people are fairing in these hard economic times.

The world is changing. We have been supporting “Big Government,” “Big Business” and “Big Pharma” for far too long and have not been honoring ourselves, our lives and our passions. We have looked to others to hand us our self-worth, the rules to live by and the money to live. We have not been really living a life, rather, we have been living a lie. The time has come to get off of our collective bums and start really living the lives we were meant to live. Now is the time to make your dreams a reality.

You were meant to live with a spring in your step, a song in your heart and the feeling that you completely and unconditionally love the life you live. You were born to pursue your dreams, live your passion and have overflowing abundance in all areas of your life. You have been told for far too long that you can not have your dreams. you have believed that you are not good enough, smart enough or you have found some other lame reason to push your dreams to a back burner. If that is what you tell yourself, of course your dreams will be out of reach. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. Only you can fulfill your role to be the best You there is. Only you have the passions you have. Only you can dream your dream and only you can fulfill it.

Now is the time to re-evaluate your life and start anew! Now is the time to grab hold of your dreams and your life and fulfill the dreams you have always had. Economic hard times can have a positive affect on your life. It can give you the courage and faith in yourself to live up to your full potential and be the person you have always known you are in your heart.

Have you lost your way? Have your dreams become dim? There are people all around you who have been singing this song of hope to you for many years. Have you been listening? Now is the time to go for it! Now is the time to grab hold of your dreams and don’t let go.

“Big Business” is not going to save you, “Big Pharma” is not going to save you and “Big Government” is not going to save you only you can save you and with the right tools and the right support system, you will find that eventually, you will live the life you have always dreamed. You must first take that step and learn how to trust and believe in yourself. Hope is holding out a hand to help you find your way. You only need to grab on and hold fast as if your life depends on it because it does.

by AnnaMaria Elings

Did you know that a person can have fear of almost any imaginable thing there is. Statistics state that there are over 4,000 types of fear known to man.

God created our bodies with the fight or flight ability. When we are pressed into a frightening situation or even thought, our physical body automatically goes into an alarm stage. When the stressor is not relived our body moves into a resistance stage. In the resistance stage, long term affects of fear develop into physical symptoms.

The hypothalamus, which preserves function of the body’s status quo, will be determined by the stress and anxiety, happening in the mind pertaining to fear. At length, the body will be ineffective to mend itself, entering an exhaustion mode. God has fashioned our bodies to repair and restore itself. Nevertheless, when we are not taking every thought captive placing us into a perpetual state of fight or flight our bodies cannot repair.

If you are having anxiety attacks, whom are you listening to? Are you able to take your thoughts captive and control them or are you in fear? “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7 Does your mind wander and run off of its own accord? As stated by God in the Bible, He did not give us a spirit of fear; but of power, and love and a sound mind. 2nd Timothy 1:7 Clearly, if we have control of our thoughts than we have the power to crush down the spirit of fear and its consequences.

The Bible tells us that “fear not” is found 365 times. Pretty interesting, that God talks about this very subject so often. God also tells us that faith and fear are equal. So you ask what do fear and faith have in common? Fear and Faith both project into the future and demand to be fulfilled. Fear is filled with negative thoughts and represents your enemy, the devil. Faith is fulfilled by the ever present peace of God.

The holistic approach supposedly treats the whole patient, but how well do they understand mans spirit and soul from Gods point of view? Your enemy, the devil, however, understands our unique creation quite well. He has made a study of Gods creation for a long time. He knows about our mind/body/soul connection. The devil knows that we are only sustained in health and sanity to the degree that we reflect the nature of the living God. Your enemy knows that by controlling our thoughts, he can control your biology,as well.

Fear centers on earthly concerns and is an accuser, prompting you of bygone failures and that God is undeserving. It disunites us from God and tortures us,drives us, and is infectious. You can conceive how true this is? Once you encompass fear, it is typically a driving force, pressing us into destructive thought territory, stimulating our body to go into flight or fight.

Faith is whom we will believe and put your trust in, which is God. Faith comprises hope and trust that God will take care of your future day. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of which is not yet seen.” Hebrews 11:1 When we step out in faith, we believe ahead of time, what we eventually see in the physical, therefore it leads us, not drives us. God respects those who believe and trust in Him. It is your choice to choose faith or fear. Exercise bringing every thought into captivity and striking out in faith that God is in command of your time to come.

A lot of people struck with cancer become so frustrated that they begin to think that cancer is the end of their lives. Cancer is definitely not the end of life because theres always hope. There are a lot of miraculous healing everyday and one of the diseases being cured includes cancer.

It might seem that cancer is a burdensome ailment because of the difficulty and pain you are going through each day. Dont think of the cancer symptoms as the punishment for your sins, instead think of them as gifts from God. He wanted to call your attention ever since you walked this earth but somehow the worldly things have diverted your attention. Cancer may be the only way to make you get closer to God.

Take cancer as the opportunity to renew your faith in Him. If you lift up all of your burdens to Him, you will be healed physically and spiritually. Spiritual healing is much more important than physical healing because you are cleansing your self and your soul of all the negative afflictions you have gone through, including your sins.

When you can learn how to embrace your cancer as a gift from God, you will certainly feel better and lighter because you dont have burdens anymore. This kind of realization has healed a lot of people since theres nothing impossible with God. Always remember what Jesus said, Your faith has healed you.

Having cancer also allows you to patch up your relationships with your friends and family. If you have been living in despair because you are unable to forgive those who have hurt you, cancer will make you realize that forgiveness is the only way to rid yourself of the emotional burden you have been living with.

As you can see, cancer is not the end of life. It is merely a detour on your road to healing, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. You will have a renewed life and renewed faith in God.

Statistics state that there are over 4,000 types of fear known to man. If you think about this, it really is true. One can have fear of almost any imaginable thing there is.

We were designed with the fight or flight ability. When we are subjected to a fearful situation or even thought, our body automatically goes into an alarm stage. If the stressor is not resolved our body than moves into a resistance stage. In this stage, long term affects of fear manifest into physical symptoms.

The hypothalamus, which keeps up the function of the body’s homeostasis, is influenced by the stress and anxiety, occurring in the mind concerning fear. Finally, the body will be inefficient to heal itself, introducing an exhaustion mode. God has designed our physical structure to mend and regenerate itself. Nonetheless, if we’re not bringing every thought into captivity it places us into a constant state of fight or flight in which our bodies can’t repair itself.

What are you hearing when your body goes into an anxiety attack? Are you having trouble taking your thoughts captive and controlling where your mind goes? For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he. Proverbs 23:7 Where does your mind wander to? To frightening and worrisome things in the future? God stated in the Bible, that He did not give us a spirit of fear; but of power, and love and a sound mind. 2nd Timothy 1:7 Listen, if we have control of our thoughts than we have the power to cast down every imagination behind the spirit of fear and how it can affect our physical bodies.

The Bible tells us, roughly 365 times to “fear not”. Pretty awe-inspiring that God addresses this subject so often. He likewise, assures us that faith and fear are equal. What do fear and faith have in common? Both project into the future and demand to be carried out. Fear is full of negativity and symbolizes your opposition, the devil. Faith comprises the irrefutable peace of God.

The holistic approach purportedly cares for the whole patient, but how intimately do they understand mans spirit and soul from Gods standpoint? Your foe, the devil, however, realizes our incomparable creation rather well. He has made a survey of Gods creation for a very long time. He recognizes how God created our mind/body/soul connection. The devil knows that we are only maintained in wellness and sanity to the level that we reflect the nature of the living God. Your foe recognizes that by holding captive our thinking, he can command your biology, also.

Fear focuses on the world and is an accuser, reminding you of past failures and that God is unworthy. It separates us from God and torments us, drives us, and is contagious. Think about how true this is? When you embrace fear, it is generally a driving force pushing us into negative thought territory, causing our body to go into flight or fight.

Faith is all about “whom we will believe”, which is God. Faith is about trust and hope that God will take care of your future. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of which is not yet seen.” Hebrews 11:1 If you have faith you believe before you see it in the physical. Faith gently leads us, unlike when fear drives us. God honors and respects those of you who believe and trust in Him. Faith or fear are a decision you can choose. Practice taking every thought captive and walking out in faith that God is the one in control of your future.
