The dragonfly is an ancient creature, dating back over 180 million years. These strange looking insects are found in spiritual teachings including Feng Shui. There are over 650 varieties of dragonflies with many colors.

Dragonflies spend their first two years in the water as nymphs. Then they climb from the water and transform completely into winged insects with great agility and speed. Their agility in flight is similar to that of the hummingbird, another powerful totem spirit.

Since the dragonfly spends the first two years of its life in the water it is closely associated with both the emotional aspects as well as subconscious. During this water bound time the dragonfly grows and sheds up to 15 skins.

Because the dragonfly has two distinct worlds within its full lifecycle, with the nymph stage of its earlier water life, and the air based life of flight, the dragonfly is a symbol of transformation. With all great transitions in life we must understand that there are steps along the way, and all change takes time.

The eyes of a dragon fly give many perspectives, reminding us to look past the illusions we carry in life. The wings, though transparent, hold the luminous reflection of many colors, offering us a doorway into the many spectrums of energy we have in our spiritual realm.

The dragonfly can be utilized as a symbol for understanding an aspect of our evolutionary process in life. Taken as a whole our life is very transformational, seen or unseen. We can learn patience and faith that the steps we take will lead us in the right direction.

We can bring the influence of the dragonfly totem into our meditation. Dragonflies remind us to take flight, moving out of the stories we live within. We can look past the illusions, finding greater clarity with our emotions and introspective self.

Have you ever noticed that sometimes we see only what we want to see? You would think that as much focus as we are able to place in any part of our lives that we would see things clearly. That is not always the case, and I share with you a story about how easy it is to miss what is right before your eyes. Sometimes our perceptions get in the way.

Recently I shared a fun evening with a close, long time friend, enjoying a great desert plate as we played a friendly but competitive round of cribbage games. My friend is very good at the game, and rarely misses anything.

This time our games were all very close, with only a few point spread naming the winner. After our third game I suggested one more for a tie-maker, a little variation to the usual tie-breaker. This added a novel feel to the fourth and last game of the evening.

The pressure was now on more than in the previous games. We made the first turn of the board fairly even, then the second. Then a turn of the cards gave me the lead, and this was just the opposite of what we needed to have our tie-making conclusion to the match.

We had only a couple of hands left in the last leg of the game. My friend was so close to finishing and taking the game, but when she counted she missed a few points. I could not overlook it, so I claimed the points for myself.

She responded to her loss of points by saying, I didn’t see those points, my thoughts were on the queen I threw in the crib. Those points would have, and should have, given her the game and tied our match. What happened that caused her to overlook something so obvious?

This turn in the game seemed to fit right into our conversation throughout the game, talking about my new book, Now is the Time to Believe. I guess she was just preparing for her chance to read the book!

Its important that we have the ability to see what is important to see, and filter out the rest. This seemingly automated system does not always work in our favor though. Sometimes we miss what is right before our eyes, overlooking what we want because we are overwhelmed with what we believe.

Seeing all that life has to offer is a choice, a privilege, and magical tool in life that gives us the opportunity to live a rich, fulfilling life. Seeing all that life has to offer gives us the stepping stones that lead us to new adventures, greater knowledge, and higher level understanding.

There are many ways each of us can view our own world, whether its through the eyes of bountiful, or the eyes of life challenges. We all create opportunities in our lives to open our eyes in a new perspective and change our focus.

Our spiritual energy body consists of energy passages, much like the arteries and veins in the body, and chakras, which might be compared to our physical organs. There are seven primary chakras. This article covers an understanding of the throat chakra.

Chakras, just like organs, each serve a specific role. The word chakra is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning wheel. The throat chakra focuses on our ability to communicate.

Our ability to communication is most often seen as an exchange that flows between two distinct beings. Words are a common means of communication, but we are not limited to this single form. We have other means of communication like sign language that uses words, symbols and gestures to convey our message.

Our communication is multi-dimensional, meaning that it is not restricted to our words only. We use our facial expressions, our breath, and our silence to convey our messages.

The communication chakra does not work alone, but serves as the passageway for the many other chakras or spiritual centers in the body. When we use our communication skills we combine body mind and spirit through our ideas, feelings, belief system, and perceptions.

There is another aspect of the throat chakra that is called the inner voice. This ability connects us body, mind and spirit. Our inner voice is the conduit to connect to our own emotions, feelings, perceptions, knowledge and our higher spiritual powers.

Telepathy is another type of communication that we process through the throat chakra. Telepathy is simply communicating energetically without using the body as a tool. We all use this form of communication, but since our normal worldly teachings do not include acknowledging these subtle forms of communication many of us never give ourselves credit for using this ability.

This basic overview gives you a greater awareness of the throat chakra and how this chakra helps us in our ability to communicate with others. Combining awareness and intent we can more easily heal ourselves, and strengthen our ability to express ourselves in this world.

There are many ways each of us can view our own world, whether its through the eyes of bountiful, or the eyes of life challenges. We all create opportunities in our lives to open our eyes in a new perspective and change our focus.

The Mayan Tzolkin calendar is an ancient spiritual view of the cycles we experience throughout our lives. Beginning a new 260 day cycle just days before our present day New Years we can approach the days of resolutions with a little though and a lot of letting go. This is a time to begin again, taking the best from where we have been and stepping up to a whole new level.

Time was seen by the Mayans as an inward spiral, speeding up over time. That spiral can be experiences as well through the shifts of consciousness on the planet today. The energy of the planet is rising quite rapidly. How can we make the best of this every changing situation?

With time moving faster, and energy rising, how are we supposed to find balance in this world? The answer is simple. I mean it, simple. We have a yin yang world, and in order to have your yin yang power all we really need to do is balance the ever-rising cosmic energy flow with the energies provided to us by the earth.

We have created some interesting concepts about our spirituality and consciousness. Many seek their spiritual self, but the spirit is the most consistent part of you. You cannot help but be spirit. We also have the other side of the spectrum, with our physical existence and perceptions. The secret is finding a good viewpoint somewhere in the middle.

With all the focus on spirituality we still have our basic body experience. No, not so basic. We have quite an array of abilities and expressions available to us in the body, and have woven quite a perception of what life truly is, based on the physical experience. What if we were able to mix both the physical and spiritual sides? We can find balance, bringing more of our spiritual awareness into the body.

One primary step to our body mind spirit integration is letting go of our complex past. This is where the Mayan cycles come into play. As we move from one cycle to the next there are many subtle messages to let go of the past. A burdened soul cannot easily rise to the next level.

When we bring ourselves into balance, opening our awareness to our spirituality while connecting and releasing through our connectivity to the planet, we are empowered. We have the resources of both levels available to us. This is an Edison moment, bringing in that pulsing positive and negative or yin yang flow that illuminated that light bulb.

What we do in life gives us value and shows the world who we are. Many of us focus that outward expression into their work. What then do you do if your job disappears? Where is your value?

Our work, like many other aspects of our lives, is based on an exchange of energies. We give service, time, or knowledge. In exchange we receive a paycheck, sometimes even a bonus. We may benefit in many other ways that are less tangible, such as team work, a handshake, or an accomplishment that will promote us in the future.

For most of us our work takes a great deal of our time and energy. Our training drives us to learn and develop our career, leaving our personal and social development in a secondary role. While it is true that earning or producing what we need for our day to day needs is important, placing too much emphasis on this role can be devastating when something goes haywire in that area.

When we place the bulk of our value in one area it can be devastating when that avenue for self definition dries up. Finding we are the target of a layoff or firing can quickly strip us of the outer shell that we use to define who we are.

Losing a job will always impact our lives. The primary focus is on the loss of income, and this level is important and real. We must care for our day to day needs. Many of us feel other levels of loss as well, for our jobs often give us a sense of value and worth as well as routine and interaction with others.

It cannot be denied that the most effective solution is to gain new employment or return to our old job. In the meantime we can turn around this unfortunate situation by looking inward and using this incident as a tool for self improvement.

Take a look at your forms of expression. Has your work been the core of your universe, or do you have sufficient outlets in other areas of your life for exchange with the world? Count your blessings, right now. What other areas do you connect to in your life? This list can include family, friends, animals, charity, exercise, hobbies, worship, and even something as simple as tending to your garden.

Change can give us an opportunity to release and realign ourselves, letting go of those things that have built up over many years. We don’t always recognize how big a load we carry! In part two of this series we will explore some easy to use techniques for self awareness and release.
